The Foundation for Governance Research and Education is an independent charitable foundation focused on addressing the crucial need for good governance.
Now is the Time
The need for good governance in banking and finance is now glaringly obvious and is reported on daily world wide. Therefore, following FGRE's Engagement Publication (see below), FGRE is furthering its research work on governance, particularly in banking and finance, in partnership with business schools.
The Foundation is also developing, with business schools educational programmes at post graduate and executive level to include governance. The focus will be preparing future leaders in governance as well as providing professional development for existing management.
Dr John Mellor's Book
Practical Corporate Governance: For Smaller Quoted Companies and Private Companies
published by Jordan Publishing
Smaller quoted companies and private companies are a vital component of the economy. How these companies are governed is critical, not only to their prosperity but also to their capacity to attract funds for investment and growth. However, to date the focus of corporate governance has been on much larger companies. This book brings for the first time a focus to the governance of smaller companies.

Foundation Update
A ‘FIRST' FOR FGRE
A JOINT CONFERENCE WITH BRISTOL BUSINESS SCHOOL -
“Governance and Accountability in Financial Services”
The Conference took place on 12th March at the excellent venue of the University of the West of England and was organised by FGRE and Bristol Business School (the Centres of Global Finance and Leadership and Organisational Ethics). This was a first for FGRE and other conferences will follow in due course. The welcome by the University's Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance of governance research and education and the programme included presentations by two of FGRE's Patrons, Sir Bryan Nicholson GBE and Professor Ian Percy CBE (President), and FGRE's Senior Adviser Sir John Bourn KCB.
Their presentations addressed the following topics:
Sir Bryan Nicholson - Overall Perspective: Today's Position and Challenges
Professor Ian Percy - Reflections on the Revised UK Corporate Governance Code
Sir John Bourn - Financial Regulation and Risk Management
The text of these Presentations can be downloaded from our website page “Reports and Comment” .
The Conference reflected the Business School's focus on governance, in collaboration with FGRE and, in particular, governance in the financial sector. An important follow up to the Conference will be the roll out of a programme of tailored executive and postgraduate education in the field – Bristol Business School will be the first UK business school to create such an initiative which is centred around ‘real life' situations and guidance from experienced industry practitioners. It will include specific modules for postgraduates and programmes for executive management and non-executive directors.
More on the Conference and its conclusions will be available in due course.
