Bristol Business School and Visiting Professorship

Bristol Business School, a faculty of the University of the West of England, has roots going back to the nineteenth century and the Bristol College of Commerce. It is home to more than 175 academics and 17 Professors based within the Schools of: Accounting and Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Operations and Information Management, Organisation Studies, and Strategy and International Business.

In many ways, the Bristol Business School bears the imprint of its past, remaining a professionally and industrially oriented faculty. It believes in working closely in partnership with private and public sector organisations in meeting real business and professional needs. Dr John Mellor's appointment as the first Visiting Professor in Corporate Governance forms part of the Business School's strategy to become a major centre for research and education in governance. He leads and plays a major role in corporate governance research and the development of case studies.

Case studies are an important means of learning from experience and the real world, at the same time providing a platform to develop guidelines and principles of best practice; for the teaching of governance regimes, updates and theory; and for providing real and practical insights into behaviour and relationships at board level. They are a necessary supplement to more academic studies and a proven educational tool. The case study enables exploration both of the board's deliberations and decisions in dealing with a given set of circumstances, and of lessons to be learned for effectiveness as a board member. Role-playing is also an important and valuable tool.

Case studies are selected for their value in illustrating corporate governance issues and boardroom dynamics from amongst quoted and private companies, the public and not-for-profit sectors.
