The Foundation
Purpose
The Foundation for Governance Research and Education is a not-for-profit (company limited by guarantee) research and education Foundation, established in 2002 as the Foundation for Independent Directors, with a two-fold purpose:
- To research into corporate governance including producing a body of case studies for use in education and development programmes for executives, non-executive directors and boards, operating in the private and public sectors.
- To apply its research through publishing and education, coupled with its standing as an independent authority in corporate governance, to influence debate, contribute to policy making and to promote the highest levels of professional standards amongst boards of directors.
Partnership with Bristol Business School
The Foundation works in partnership with Bristol Business School (part of the University of the West of England) where the Foundation's founder and Chairman, Dr John Mellor, is Visiting Professor in Corporate Governance.
The Advisory board
The direction and topics for research are advised by an Advisory board of representatives from institutional investors, corporates, the professions, academics and the public sector. This maintains relevance to private and public sector needs.
The board is also a forum for open discussion and debate on governance issues of mutual importance and interest, further informing the work of the Foundation.
Education and development programmes
Programmes for executives, non-executive directors and boards operating in the private and public sectors are devised and delivered by the Foundation and Bristol Business School.
Brief History
The Foundation stems from more than five years' experience of a development programme for non-executive directors, devised and directed by Dr John Mellor. The programme, the Non Executive Director's Forum, was sponsored by NatWest bank and Exeter University and was fully supported by a group of institutional investors. With the help of a faculty of senior figures from business, the City and the professions the programme ran successfully over 5 years and accommodated 250 directors.
The experience demonstrated conclusively the value of case study centred learning in education and development for directors. In turn it exposed a need for research into corporate governance to generate outcomes relevant to business.
